How do I flatten a 3D model in AutoCAD, or project it to a plane?

I am working in AutoCAD 2008 and would like to work with this model on the X,Y plane ONLY. I know in Rhino 3D there is a "project onto plane" command - which I can't seem to find. I am trying to draft a 2D plan from this 3D model and need to snap from , let's say, a sidewalk, to a rooftop.....in one plane. By drafting the 3D from the XY view.....it LOOKS right...but I can't dimension anything accurately.

1. There is a toolbar called view, from there hit "Top" view it will put you in the xy plane
