Where can I find a good 3D Modeling Program for making 3D Models for video games?

Basically, I want to make MODS, or eventually learn enough about the process of making video games to become a video game designer. And I would like to start with the 3D Modeling. If you know of any, or any tips for some one going down the video game design road please help me out.

1. Check out MilkShape.... developed for modders.... or 3DSmax if you want something a little more heavyweight. Alternatively, search the internet. Tips for someone on the "video game road"? Learn to code. Ignore the graphics - they are just bells and whistles, the real action is in coding. Learning to make 3D models is about 1% of what is involved in making a computer game...
