How should I pay a consultant building digital 3D models?

This is my first hire and I want to be fair. Jobs are quoted at custom flat rates. hourly? by task? by job? percentage? is there an industry standard? any input would help. thanks. mike

  1. I am a consultant for a local tribal casino. I am paid by job. Each employee I evaluate, I am paid for. If you have already agreed to the fee, then pay 50% up front, and then 50% upon completed project. That way, the consultant is not out money up front (which makes them more eager to work for you) and you haven't spent all of your money on a model you don't like. It's win/win...they are helped up front, and you hold the power of them only getting the rest when it's what you need, and not just a "scam job".
  2. If you have a specific project you need them, have them issue you a quote with a scope of work, a cost break down for the activities needed to complete the scope and terms and conditions for payment, warranty of the services. If this is on-going work, set an individual hourly rate for their services. If this is work that is to be performed off-site, you may want it to be quoted by the job with deadlines because you cannot monitor their activities.
  3. Advise you to get a fixed price per job rather than go hourly. If there are any additions, let them quote you on the amount of estimated time extra and rates. Get everything upfront. Not everyone but some people out there will make it costly if you leave open ends on the project.
