1. Yea. Its a good animation software. There is requrement of Maya artist in animation industry...Do u know Maya?? I know very little.. But I work in 3DS Max...
2. A powerfull software for 3D Design and Animation, I would suggest if you want to learn it go for a tutorial or a beginners guide to Maya and yes you can get good interactive Cds for it too.

4. Maya is available free if you don't mind using the personal learning edition, which will invoke a copyright stamp over all of your images and animation. If you have access to any school, it would be in your best interest to find out if they have Maya and use their lab time to learn it. HighEnd3d is the site I've been using since version 1 with Power animator back in '95. It has a lot of pretty good tutorials and an ever-ready bboard full of people who have the same questions I need answers to.
