Prototypes?

I've recently designed something to solve a problem at work. I'm thinking of patenting it, but I want to get a testable prototype first. The object in question is about 4x6 inches, and made of plastic. No one at the plant where I work deals much with plastics, so they can't make it to my specifications. Does anyone know of a company that might be able to manufacture something like this? Also, what CAD program(s) would you recommend for making 3D drawings, etc.

  1. These guys have a custom CAD program you download to design the parts. You then upload the design and place your order. http://www.emachineshop.com/ I first read about them on Wired or Slashdot.
  2. Do a Internet search on stereolithography. There are service beauros that will actually 'print' you a plastic part. If you can supply a 3d part, in whats called 'iges' format, the company can provide you with a part that is exactly what you want. It may not be stiff enough, but it will be a reasonable facsimile. One word of caution though, if the design needs to be made of an engineering plastic like teflon, flouropolymers, etc, you'd be out of luck. They can make them out of acrylics and urethanes. Plastics can me machined, if nescessary, and glued sometimes I would recommend Pro/Engineer. But Solidworks is fine too.
