which is most commonly used in mechanical engineering industry?

  1. First let me say that my view may be slanted slightly as I use SE. Many people will say that Solid Works is a better program. You really can't believe them any more than you can me, unless you find someone who has run both. I can offer that the 3D kernel used by SW is leased from the SE folks, so the methods of doing things are very similar. I think the SE vs. SW debate is probably more about which one you use and therefore like the most. That said, I will yield to those who have used both for a length of time and have an opinion based on that use. However, when compared to Autodesk's Inventor, Solid Edge is a superior program, no question. I have used both and SE wins in every category. One nice feature about SE, SW and Inventor, once you learn one the other two become very intuitive and quite easy to come up to speed very quickly. ProE, sorry I have little good to say about them. Too complicated, too many clicks, just too much yuck. I should say, it has been 3 or 4 years since I looked into ProE. Nuff said. From a "number of seats" perspective, I believe SW claims more seats in industry. Inventor claims a lot of seats but a large portion of theirs are in education. My seat is SE. Intergraphics, Catia, etc, are all high-end 3D modeling programs on steroids. Yes they serve their industries well, but do not translate into the bulk of manufacturing and general 3D modeling needs.
