Why does my computer think I only have one speaker?

There is no sound coming out of my right speaker (the left and sub woofer are fine). I don't think it's unplugged, and I don't think it is something wrong with the speaker because it happened with another set of speakers before, too. Upon opening the volume control in XP, it has the 3D Depth and PC Speaker balances greyed out. Possible causes and solutions? Note that it worked just fine yesterday.

1. Re-install the drivers while the speakers are on. This will detect both speakers and provide drivers so the whole set works. There are many causes for that, one could be a bad installation, other could be a bad sound card. But based on what you said, it sounds like a driver problem.
