3D - 2

What software is used for television animations?

I know that tradational animation is made by drawing one picture after another, but it seems in cartoons today that to achieve the lev el of detail and amount of movement that a 3d or other special type of program is used rather than frame by frame animation. If so what are the programs that are used. Thank you in advance for your answers.

  1. 3D studio Max - Pixar uses this, combined with photoshop you are pretty much unstoppable.. check out www.tutorialized.com tonnes of stuff on 3D
  2. Pretty much everyone is using Shake, Final Cut Pro, Motion and After Effects for composition and Maya for 3D. A lot of the cartoons you see nowadays are actually done in Flash, of Internet fame. Granted, they tend to have a lot more production and hand tweening done to them, but it's still Flash. There's also quite a few cartoons that use a combination of CG 3D effects together with hand-drawn animation. Futurama was probably one of the first widely known series that did this (though quite a few anime did it as well), but after that went off the air The Simpsons started doing it as well. Look for it when they do shots of cars moving or fast action scenes.
  3. I think some people use blender....( http://www.blender.org ) And photoshop...of course...( http://www.adobe.com ) A yah...having those two styles and tools combined you are pretty unstoppable.
