What are the keys to building a high performing computer for 3D animation and graphics?

I have had several computers with expensive components and have never really been able to get good 3D rendering performance. So I am just curious if anyone has experience in this area that could give me some input.

1. You would go with a dual or quad core intel processor and use vista home prem. Also use at least 4 gigs of ram and on the video card make sure you use nvidia in a sli mode and in the hard drives use sata in a raid0 config. That will give you the best performance u can get in 3d rendering.
2. The best place to go is the developer site and check their hardware requirements. For instance, below is the hardware requirements for Autodesk's Maya.
