Can anyone help me with information on 3d software for creating anime characters and movies?

I am a newbie to the 3d art field. I have done webdesign and am capable of using the Macromedia (now adobe) suite. Now I'd like to learn how to make 3d animations. It would be nice if there was something out there that would allow me to work with a pre-made example and edit it to my needs, but if I have to learn from scratch, that's fine. I am looking for information on which softwares are good and which are best for which aspects. Free, or downloadable software would be the best, but I am willing to pay for decent software too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

2. You can actually make animations using Photoshop and Image Ready (see Google for some tutorials). Flash is also good for internet based projects. But 3D Studio Max is by far the best for all! Good luck.
