Graphics card/virus is freezing up my computer?

Lately I have been having issues with my computer freezing up at random intervals. Recently I have figured out that this only happens when my graphics card tries to build some 3/d image (like a video game, Google earth, solid works renderings, etc). These problems have started just after my Norton anti virus expired. It was expired for about a month before I found AVAST and I downloaded it. It fixed a few issues but It still freezes up whenever I try to load up anything 3D. I think It is a virus, but I really have no idea why it is shutting off/freezing. I have a ATI all in wonder 9600xt graphics card and I have a Microsoft Windows xp Professional. I have NEVER had this problem before and It used to run perfectly.

  1. I suppose it could be virus-related, but it's more likely your video card drivers are corrupted. I would recommend downloading the latest version. I've included a link to the latest drivers for your card (Catalyst Software Suite). good luck!
  2. There's a chance the new antivirus application has some realtime component that's conflicting with the 3D data as it's being rendered and causing lockup problems. there's also a chance that you have a driver problem and should update them; Another might actually be that your video card has died somehow, and is having hardware problems of that nature and should be replaced.
