What is the difference between 4D transponder and smart key transponder?

I wanted to know whats the difference between the transponder keys because theres some programmers that support ecu type 2 and 3 and ecu type 4 and 5. If you could please explain the differences and in detail thank you.

1. I think that 4D transponders only open the doors, while a smart key transponder will also let you get in and start the car without actually taking out a key. Hope this helps!
