Why should I be capable of drawing excellent jewelry renderings if I wanna be a fine jewelry designer?

  1. You should be able to put your idea on paper to make it clear to the client.
  2. Because people can't see ideas that are on the inside of your head, dear. If you want to design jewelry, then I would hope that you could at least draw it.
  3. It is not enough to be able to vision your jewelry and the details that you want on the piece - you have to be able to envision it enough to be able to produce it - which requires drawing!@
  4. A client can't see into your mind.
  5. i would also recommend that you start modeling your pieces to see what is practical. I have been doing jewelry for over 30 years and many designers don't understand the process. It may look good on paper but can it be mass produced? Study and learn drawing, sculpting, casting and mold making. Experience is the best teacher.
  6. If you're wondering whether you could get away with "simple" drawings rather than "excellent" or "realistic" renderings, then there are a few reasons. First of all, great drawings will "sell" and "communicate" your idea, which is especially important if you're trying to get it produced and fabricated by somebody else who will be providing the investment. People will want to get a good idea of what it will look like. The better the drawings, the better they'll be able to "see" this. This helps you to sell your ideas to a client or retailer who may not be capable of "visualizing" your piece very well without being provided a good illustration. Second, it improves your overall image. If your illustration is attractive, it promotes you as somebody who is professional and has a good aesthetic sense. The impression your client receives of you or the company you represent is often times just as important as the impression they receive of the particular piece of jewelry you want to produce. High quality illustration tells them that you are dedicated, driven, thorough and professional. Third, it can help you to develop and revise your own vision of the final piece. Once you see a more realistic representation of your idea on paper, it might not look how you originally thought it would. When you see things you might not have noticed before, it gives you further ideas. You might discover something that you want to change, improve or add. Finally, learning to make your own illustrations will give you more personal control over the process and save you time and money, since you won't need to rely on somebody else to produce drawings for you. (You could also use 3D drawing software to create your renderings, which would be a good option if you don't have excellent hand illustration skills.) On the other hand, it may depend on the type of jewelry you're designing. If it's possible for you to easily produce prototypes of your designs, then you could photograph the prototypes instead of making drawings.
  7. so it can be detailed enough to see the small details on the jewelry and so the maker can see clearly
