Does viewing 3d on an HD tv play okay?

I read somewhere that viewing 3d on an HD tv does not work. Is that true. I am interested in buying "Journey to the center..." and watch it in 3d. I have a 52" LCD HDTV. Will it play okay? How about a 3D unit that hooks up to the tv with the more expensive glasses?
