Is a 3D ultrasound cost much more than a regular ultrasound?
Do all docs do either based on your preference?

- Yes, they do cost more. I live in Canada. 2D ultrasounds are covered under our health care. I paid $225 for my 3D ultrasound.
- My doc's office did a regular ultrasound for my 20 week anatomy screen, then at the end she flipped a switch and did a few minutes on 3D- got us a pic and all. I assume it was covered with the regular ultrasound because I never got billed more for it. I'm sure if you had it done at one of those 3D ultrasound keepsake places it would be expensive.
- I've yet to hear of an actual doctor's office that does the 3d ultrasounds. They are considered elective and "for entertainment purposes," and since no insurance plans cover them, doctors don't really feel the need to invest huge amounts of money in the equipment. However, as the technology ages and improves, having them done electively at a private business is getting a lot more affordable. I know in my area (Orange County), packages start just under $100. Not exactly pocket change, but certainly well within reason for the experience of a lifetime! Some of the ultrasound boutiques are actually set up so you can "register" for one and people can pitch in and buy one for you, so that's something to look into as well. I've got mine scheduled for next weekend and I'm thrilled!
- At my doctors in Fl it was extra, and a lot extra. You had to go to someone who specializes with that. But my girlfriend who had her baby in ND got a bunch done at her Drs for free. I guess the best way to find out is to look it up online or to ask your Dr.
- Depends on the doctor. I have my ultrasounds as at my high risk doctor (I have a regular doctor and a high risk) Since I am high risk they have to do 2D ultrasounds every 2-3 weeks. On their machine it can also do 3D and 4D images. So my doctor will take some 3D and 4D pictures after all the necessary 2D measurements are done. I think he just assumes that since you are there and he might as well take a few minutes and do the 3D and 4D stuff as well. And it seems like he enjoys seeing our baby that way almost as much as we do. My regular doctor only has a 2D machine in her office. But she uses it only at the first visit for all patients, even the non-high risk. For all other patients she sends them to another clinic for the ultrasound at 20 weeks and if necessary other ultrasounds.
- I believe so, But I also think they aren't as safe for your baby so make SURE you get one at a doctor's office and not somewhere like the mall
