3D - 2

Do dogs see only in 3D?

After reading the debate on whether dogs see in colour or not, which i believe they do as to the anatomy of the dogs eye. what I can't remember exactly though is about 3 dimension and 2 dimension vision. I was always under the impression that dogs can only see in 3 dimension. But all these new DVD's are coming out that are supposed to keep your dog entertained while your out. But if they can't watch a 2 dimensional image on the television and only see a blurred coloured lights and sound why spend our money? So I had it backwards they can only see in 2D and not in 3D? Huh, that kinda makes sense cause my dog during training was afraid of reflections on floors, shadows, and puddles, no depth perception!

  1. They come out with all sorts of things for dogs, that does not make them all legit or even worth the money. I know my dogs couldn't care less if there is a "Doggie CD" playing for them when im gone. But dogs can only see in 2D, they can see the movement and hear the sound but no they cannot distinguish the images on the screen.
  2. hell if i know. but the thing i know is that dog see colors, but different specter then ours. their eye can catch up a lot less colors then our eye, but the can see some colors. its not true that they see black and white. look at this http://www.andrewlost.com/images/vision_page/dog_human_vision_spec_adjusted.jpg
  3. dogs can only see in black and white and during the night they can see in the dark far more better then humans so i would get a toy with stuff in it that the dog can smell and he or she will be entertained for hours.
  4. DOGS SEE IN TWO DIMINSIONS Dogs have binocular vision over about 80 degrees of their visual field, which is enough for good quality binocular vision. This does vary some by breed, with collies probably having a smaller area of binocular vision than a golden retriever due to the placement of the eyes and length of the nose.
  5. I have heard (probably while watching discover channel or animal planet) that dogs don't look at american tv's because all they see are dots. In Europe, I believe they can see the image on the tv. Other 2d images probably don't interest dogs because they don't have any smell, the scent dogs rely on most. Hearing is second, so sometimes dogs will react to a sound on tv. Eyesight is third, so they really only use it to confirm what they've already smelled and heard. The last part of this about dog senses is from a Petlane advisor.
  6. I've seen dogs follow images on a TV. I find it very hard to believe that they can't see the images on the TV. Conceptually it just doesn't make sense that something would be able to see in 3D and *not* 2D. Having no depth perception would cause someone/something to see only in 2D. 2D inherently has 1D. 3D inherently has 2D. It's simply a mathematical impossibility to have 3 dimensions without being able to see 2D planes of images. Now, that being said, dogs may have a hard time focusing on TV images, and they most likely can't differentiate between colors. So to them it might just be a blur with some moving images. But it has nothing to do with 2D vs 3D, it has to do with color blindness, sensitivity to light, etc. etc. So yeah, it might be a waste of money. But I've had a number of dogs in my life and I've known a few of them to enjoy watching TV, especially when the sounds are interesting to them.
