  1. 3d studio max
  2. There is no solid answer. Those are all very powerful 3D modeling softwares. It's a matter of personal preference. Rhino3D is a NURBS-based modeling software. Maya and 3DS are both poly-based modeling tools, but also include powerful and advanced NURBS-based modeling tools. I can't say much about Cinema 4D, as I've never used it. But my personal preferences are both Maya and 3DS. I can take a project from one, attempt it in the other, and produce the same results.
  3. What you are observing is 3D is still in its infancy. All of the above are loaded down with a non-human GUI. They are ridiculous. On the horizon is more powerful hardware using 10-CPUs in parallel. Steven Speilburg has abandoned Dreamworks and America, to pursue dirt-cheap Bollywood animation with his newly invented hardware. His advantage will be real-time video rendering for unmatched "best and most realistic results, no matter the complexity of use". And, this produciton technique should bring on the copy cats. Look at the great success of Al Jean and David Mirkin with their syndicated Simpsons bringing in vast residual checks from the worldwide broadcast reruns. Animation offers a more compacted production picture. Actors will devolve to temp employes whose job duties can be outsourced.
