what did your doctor say about having an elective 3D or 4D ultrasound

I had my regular, medical ultrasound at 20 weeks. There is a place in my town - not a doctor's office - that has 3D and 4D sonogram equipment. They require a doctor's authorization before doing the ultrasound, but when I asked my doctor to sign it, he seemed rather negative about it. He did sign it, but said that he cautioned against it because these are non-medical ultrasounds performed for keepsake purposes, the staff performing the test are not qualified as medical personnel, and that unless there is a medical reason to do one of these he would caution against it because the risks of having extra ultrasounds is unknown. I still want to do one, but now am a bit freaked out about it. Can others share what their doctors said about elective ultrasounds?

  1. I had one of the 3d-4d ultrasounds and i did contact my doctor about it. She said that it was fine....and that there shouldnt be any problems with it. I think its just to caution about unnecessary ultrasounds...but i have not heard any stories about any problems about having these ultrasounds.
  2. My doctor's office advertises the place in my city in their office. He was completely fine with it. He didn't have to sign anything though. The place here just makes sure you are actually seeing a doctor before they perform the U/S. Don't be freaked out :) The 3d is really awesome!
  3. you should do one. It doesn't matter that they are not as medically qualified because like he said it's for keepsake purposes. Definitely get it done but don't wait too late. I waited too late and my first was too big so I couldn't do it =( My dr. does them in office now, there is nothing wrong with them! Go and enjoy it =)
  4. I had one at 30 weeks and my dr didnt say anything negative about it. When I was pregnant, I had about 20 ultrasounds because I was high risk and i was never told anything about too many ultrasounds are bad for my baby. While truth is they are not medically trained, they are trained to do that procedure. They cannot tell y ou estimated weight or things like that. They are wonderful to have because when your baby gets older, you can show them. Thats what im oing with my daughter,.
  5. I knovv lots of people vvho have had these scans and there is no proof that it vvill harm you are your baby, your doctor may just have been advising you of his personal vievvs as there is no need for this scan, it is just for your ovvn plesure of seeing your baby sooner, Dont vvorry too much as if it vvas harmfull he vvould not have signed it in the first place, the only Thing I vvould say is that I think the price of theses scans is a bit high and although its amazing to see my tvvo babies vvhere vvorth the vveight to see. Also If a pregnacy is complicated, more regular scans are done to keep checking the baby so for a doctor to be against it seems rather contradictory... do vvhat you feel is right for you.. if you do enjoy and good luck vvith your pregnancy and birth xxx
