How exactly do 3D glasses effect your normal vision?

I'm doing a report on 3D glasses and how they work. I just need an explanation of how eyes typically view things and how 3D glasses change that.

1. usually 3d movies are made with 2 different colors overlaying the actually movie, red and blue, and once you put the glasses on the colors over each eye being different makes it seem like it's 3d due to each eye seeing a different color it makes it seem like it's coming out at you.
