- This site has served me well. hope it works for you
- You must communicate the fundemental points of the history of the Berlin wall: division vs. unification, repression vs. artistic freedom. As a 3D visual you can express these elements literally with copies of the images pasted on a wall. But a more interesting way would be to make the other students through participation create and then break down their own wall. A wall can be imagined but you have be told to make it real so equip the students with materials - paper with an image from the wall on onside and blank on the other and maker pens will suffice. For example here is an imagined 'happening': Divide the class in two groups. Each of the first group writes down an idea important to themselves e.g. freedom of movement, abortion, wealth. They hang these on threads strung across the room making the wall. Then offer a brief explication or commmoration to those lost trying to cross the wall. The challenge the other half of the class to remove a page of the wall justifying this to be able to cross from onside to another. You can elaborate this with incentives to cross. You can make this more relevant by writing the themes on the page beforehand and distributing them. Remember suprise and challenging prejudices will help understand both sides of the reasoning behind the wall. Also you can highlight the concept even further by using the new Israli West Bank Barrier built across territoiry claimed by Isreal and the graffiti painted on it by the artist Banksy. A modern example of the same tension - ask them will it result in the same outcome? I guess Banksy's whole body of work shows the levels to which painting on walls can reach, breaking down barriers. Take pics to let us know how you get on. All the best, Mike
