how do you go about getting a 3D or 4D ultrasound?
When i get ultrasounds i usually get a 2D but i would like a 3D or 4D, do i have to request it or is it an insurance thing? I hear its easier to tell the sex of the baby at 14/15 weeks with a 3D or 4D

- I went to UC baby here in ontario, you just call set up an appt and pay when you get there, ours wasnt covered
- Actually my doctor said the best time to do a 3d or 4d is around 28 weeks. You usually can ask your doctor about it or they will bring it up when it get s close to that week.
- 4/3ds arent covered by insurance, at least not tricare or any insurance ive heard of. i found out that i was having a boy at 15 weeks with a 2d ultrasound and it was VERY obvious. if you want a 3/4d done just wait until you are further ahead because the father along you are the better they look and more like the baby they look. my OB office did mine and it cost $200.
- i know 3D ultrasounds are expensive and i dont think insurances pay for them. i have a high risk pregnancy so the 3Ds and 4Ds are done for free but i know in a normal pregnancy i heard they cost about 400$
- They are usually only done if you have a high risk pregnancy. My doctor's office didn't even have one--they said that they would have had to send me elsewhere, had I needed one. You can still get one if you want to pay for it as it won't be covered by insurance unless your doctor orders it. You'll see him/her in 3D soon enough when he/she is born! : )
- No insurance company will cover a 3D ultrasound. You'll have to look for a place near you online. Of all the ones I checked out pretty much the basic rules are: -You have to be under the care of a doctor and already have had your 20 week ultrasound. -You need to get it done at 28-32 weeks because that is the best time to get the facial features and everything of the baby. (They are developed well, and he/she isn't too squished in there yet so the chances of getting a good shot are higher) -You have to drink something with caffeen or sugar before they start, as well as ALOT of water. That way the baby will be moving around and all the extra water helps somehow. Lastly, I'd like to advise you AGAINST getting the DVD, if that option is avaliable to you. It cost us about 40 dollars more and it was the exact same thing we saw on the screen while in the office.
- Hi! I just booked a 2D ultrasound at a place that does 2D/3D/4D ultrasounds. This was an elective ultrasound and we booked it just for the fun of it to find out the sex of the baby (hopefully) at 16 weeks. If you do a search on google for a place you should be able to find the nearest one. Unfortunately for me the nearest one is 80 miles away but they are doing a $50 "special" gender determination. It's better to book the 3D/4D ultrasound for later in pregnancy because you will be able to get better pictures of the baby by then. Most insurance companies will not pay for 3D/4D especially if they are elective like just to find out the sex. You may get lucky and your doc has a 4D, but mine does not :(.
- I paid out-of-pocket for ours yesterday. It was about $150. I don't think they would take you unless you had a medical ultrasound done at a doctor's office first. I had to provide proof that I've had one.
