Why have my dimension cross hairs disappeared in 3D Studio Max 9?

There are supposed to be cross hairs that light up yellow to show you which dimension(s) you are editing. Mine are gone... In addition, there are some kind of black anomalies that appear in all view ports BUT the perspective one, any explanation? I haven't had any of these problems working with these same exact files before.... Additional info: file type: .3DS extension ALSO this is for all files I try to edit, so it's not corrupted information.
