What 3D Geometric could maximise the surface area?

Suppose i took a 200g lump of plasticine and created a single 3D shape. Is there a shape that would maximise the surface area? Investigate different types of shapes and discover some general principles. I know a sphere has the maximum volume and minimum surface area. I need to know what the opposite would be. Thank you.

  1. There is no specific shape with a maximum surface area. Basically you'd want as many folds/vanes/protrusions as you could fit. Here are a few examples of things that are designed for maximum surface area, both natural and manmade: Heat sink - http://img.alibaba.com/photo/11645462/NP_Skived_Fin_Heat_Sink.jpg Villi inside the intestines - http://www.astrographics.com/GalleryPrints/Display/GP2134.jpg Radiator fins - http://www.speedpartz.com/radiator_fins.jpg Alveoli in the lungs - http://www-c.inria.fr/who/Marc.Thiriet/Glosr/Bio/Ventil/Fig/AlveoliDrawing.gif
  2. i would say a rectangular prism.
