anyone know of any good free 3d modeling software that is similar to 3ds max?

i tried a bunch of these free things and they didn'tt have what i needed. i want it to be free because im trying to create a detailed version of some drawings. if they have a .mdl file extension that is compatable with fate by wild tangent, that would be even better. but i dont think that is possible without official 3ds max 7.
