Is Blender 3d safe/good for use on a PC?

I recently discovered a program called Blender which I thought looked cool. I have worked a bit with 3DS max, and actually bought the program (3ds max 7), only to have it kick the bucket after a few months of good use. I want to get back into 3D modeling, but I don't want to spend another $500-1000. So is blender safe to download? I think it's an open source program, which makes me a little concerned. I also heard a little rumor about some badly designed virus sneaking into the code. Please advise.

2. It is an amazing program, and is 100% safe. (It also has a built in game engine!) I've used it for over 2 years without a single problem.
3. safe program. open source is a good thing. i use it, i love it. blender is 100% free, but isn't a bad program. i recommend you download it, view some tutorials on youtube, (first check out ones on totallyblended.com) and give it a shot
