is a dwg file 2D or 3D CAD?
I am being asked to send a dwg file to be opened in AutoCAD 2007 but when I convert and send a 3D file they cannot open it? Is it because dwg files are 2D drawings?

- Yes Of course.dwg drawings are 2D drawings...
- that doesn't matter if it is a 2d or a 3d file, Autocad handles them the same way. It might be a compatibility problem between your version and the receiver's autocad version. I often had the issue that I saved the file in the newest default dwg format and the receiver had for example autocad 2000 only and they couldn't open it. Try saving the file in an older format. Edit: hold on I just see thay the file will be opened only in autocad. What program you are using to generate the file? Is it another version of autocad or something else? If something else then the dwg file may not be compatible with autocad.
- dwg drawings are 2D drawings... what software are you using? why convert it o dwg? if its only for viewing. try e-drawings, and just send them the file in its original format. (ie: if its catia, or pro-e, or any other 3-D software... and let them view it in E-drawings. Try and send them "E-drawings". Its free, and it can open virtually any Engineering drawing. whether its CATIA, PRO-E, or Autocad. here's the links http://www.edrawingsviewer.com/pages/programs/download/index.html
- Yes. .dwg are 2D autoCAD files
- dwg files can be either. You might tryl to save it as say a 2D, AutoCAD 2004 version or a dxf format.
- Like some people said, dwg files can contain both 2d and 3d information. Though typically 3d information will be converted into surfaces if your exporting from another program to a dwg. How new is your program? Typically Autocad is not upward compatible, meaning if your program is exporting a .dwg file that is newer than the 2007 version of dwg.,they will not be able to open it. Check to see when you export, that there is an area where you can change what version of Autocad you want to export too. You can also try sending them a .dxf file or even a .3ds.
