How can you calculate the distance of an object in a picture using a single camera.?

With stereo vision you use two cameras and establish a correspondence. I am using a single camera and I want to calculate the distance from the camera to the object.

1. Forensic people have done things like this - i.e. estimating distances using the lengths of shadows in the picture or by comparing things with other known tangibles in the picture. It's unique for each picture.
