What is a good application for building 3D models?

I like to build things on paper but i would like to see them in 3D, but i need a good application that can let you break down a model into what made the model, like a gun, you can break it down in an application that shows the upper and lower recievers of the gun. This would help me build things more and see what else i can do with the models and maybe build them in real life.

1. autocad or if you wand free then get google sketch up.
2. You should look into Google SketchUp. It doesn't seem that difficult to learn to use. If you end up wanting to try animation, Blender might be a good choice. It's far more complex, and I had no idea how to use it when I tried it out though.
3. hands down-Autoddesk 3ds max. the current version is 2010. i use it a lot and it's very easy to use.
4. Blender if you want Free Autodesk Maya if you want Professional.
