Is stereoscopic imaging just nostalgia?

I was looking at the forthcoming release of Brian May’s new book which looks at some of the history of stereoscopic images. (References source: http://www.londonstereo.com/book.html ) MQ: Is stereoscopic imaging a novelty item or is there a future (such as 3d television)?

Public Comments

  1. There is a future. GPS with digital 3D stereoscopy allows measuring distances (surveying) from a single location without crossing dangerous or awkward areas like swamps, bogs, and canyons, while vertical stereoscopy with computer analysis of topography with much less on-ground verification (see also Google Earth 3D view) At the other extreme - computers can generate 3D views that don't really exist and present them to surgeons planning to cut in to bodies and geologists looking to analyze underground formations for oil, gas and minerals.
