What is the best animation program to learn that can lead over into being knowledgeable about 3d Studio Max?

I just want something simple that can teach me the basics until I cough up the cash for the big programs. Any suggestions?

2. Well you can try using whichever one you want/ or have access to right now.. Maybe blender or another free application until you have the one you want to use (http://www.blender.org/) if im not wrong it's free. Since the software is somewhat only a tool, which ever one you have experience in will most likely help you at least with understanding 3D when you get to "Max".. 3ds Max it indeed very VERY powerful. 3. Actually you can download a trial of 3ds Max at the Autodesk site and start learning it right away. It's not that hard so you won`t need another program to learn the basics of 3d. Take a look at 3dbuzz.com They have the best 3ds Max (also Maya and Cinema 4d) tutorials I've seen so far. You can learn all the basic stuff there. They're very informative, easy to understand and entertaining.
