How do I extrude something with holes in cinema 4d?

I am trying to take a a traced letter from Adobe Illustrator CS4 and merge it into MAXON Cinema 4D and extrude it there. The problem is that whenever I extrude the letter (it is an "A") the hole in the A is filled in. I think i need to somehow tell illustrator that this hole is part of the A. How do i do that?

1. I don't have adobe illustrator and have never worked with it before but I maybe able to help if you upload the file created in illustrator (ready to be merged in C4D)
