3D - 2

How would a 4d ultrasound capture time?

I just comprehended the meaning of 4d, but how would an ultrasound show that?

  1. They say it is 4-d, but that means it is incredibly detailed, and 3-d, not that is captures time.
  2. By capturing a number of instantaneous volume sets that are adjacent in time, the individual volumes can be played as a movie, as individual 2D images can be played like a movie. Most of the time the information would need to be processed so that only the anatomy of interest would be visible, or isolated, then have the image rendered so that shading is used to imply depth of field. Normal ultrasound moving images, or clips, are 2D pictures played in temporal sequence, but these aren't conventionally referred to as "3D". 3D is reserved for volume data, and the name is extrapolated to 4D to imply motion in time.
