What is a 3D Television?

What exactly is a 3D Television? Surely all televisions are 2D and its only the programming that can be transmitted in 3D and they can only be received if you wear goggles? So what is all the 3D television hype and news about 3D televisions on the way this year?

1. The next generation of 3D TV work differently to the old color separation technique. There are actually several different ways 3D can generated such are fast frame switching or by having a polarized filter on the screen - but they all still need the glasses.
