Does a 3D/4D ultrasound cause discomfort to the baby?

I watched a documentary on National Geographic recently about fetal development. The show said that 3D/4D ultrasounds commonly cause babies to grimace and move around rapidly. The show hypothesized that perhaps there is something involved in the 3D/4D ultrasounds that causes some sort of discomfort to the baby. Perhaps the baby can somehow hear the high pitched sounds? Has anyone else heard this? Is there any evidence to back this up?

  1. It doesn't cause them pain, but yes the sounds are probably pretty annoying to them.
  2. Have never heard that and don't think they would be an option at the doctors office if in fact they caused problems to fetus.
  3. I think that it is just a hypothesis, and has no proven facts! I had a 3D-4D done when I was 32 weeks, and my baby wanted to sleep and that is about it. She really wasn't too hyper or anything like that. I would say that it is fine, otherwise why would a Dr. perform it??
  4. I think its all ultrasounds. An ultrasound is sound waves passed throughout your skin, so you can see the baby. My baby covered her face when they did it and she turned her back a couple time. I think she didn't like it, but I have never heard anything about it harming the baby. Everyone gets at least one ultrasound and there are a lot of healthy babies out there.
  5. i don't think that is completely true. we just had our 3d/4d and she honestly did not move at all! o well she moved her mouth in a sucking motion once or twice but that was about it! she just slept through the whole entire thing.
  6. My little guy would move away from the sounds. I dont think they can hurt the baby just probably more annoying. Some studies say you shouldnt get any uneccesary ultrasounds but others say its fine. Talk to your doctor.
  7. i asked my doc about it and she said that would be great to do :) she didn't say anything bad about it with exception to the cost 70-200 dollars and we'd have to pay out of pocket. but other than that she said it would be great if we got one done. :) plenty of people have had it done and the baby came out just fine :)
