need help with my dodge ram, what gear should i put it in?

i have a 1999 dodge ram truck 1500 5.9l v8 magnum, and i love it but i keep hearing this knocking sound, i told my grandfather because it was his old truck and i thought he could help. he told me i musta had it in the wrong gear, and that i should put it in neutral.i checked and that night i put it in neutral i think!!, because it ran smooth as hell on the way home. but the next day i messed with it, (why did i do that!!) and now i hear the knocking noise again. i looked in the manual and it said to put it in 2h fo natural conditions. its in 2h . and its steal making that noise. what should i do and should i put it in neutral or in 2h? and if i put it in neutral, how should i do it? because my grandaddy told me to put in drive and jigle it or somthing like that. help please. i tried putting it in park and shifting it to 2h, n,4l and 4d win i put it in neutral it's just in neutral and i jus need the smooth sound and ride when i drive. and pluss i cant go pas 50 with ought the truck shaking. and its not the engine because i put a almost new one in.

  1. check your front wheel bearings and u-joints
  2. if you drove it in 4 wheel drive while messing around with it there's a good chance you may have damaged an axle in it r damaged the transfer case, you need to have a transmission shop test drive it and see what they say about it,they won't charge you nothing for a test drive, driving a 4 wheel drive on dry ground while locked in will damage it,it should be in 2 hi on dry grouond for every day driving good luck with it.
