3D - 2

Is the fetal anatomy ultrasound that is usually performed at around 20 weeks done in 3D or 4D?

If not, when do hospitals usually perform a 4D ultrasound to look at the unborn child?

  1. 4D ultrasounds tend to be private. the normal 20 week scan in the hospital is just as your 12 week would have been.
  2. I've never heard of a 4D ultrasound. Usually the options are a regular one (the black and white pic's that look a little like x-rays) and the 3D (the pics where you can see the baby's face, like strange sepia toned photographs). Honestly I think it depends on the facilities at the hospital. I know that there are also places you can pay to have the 3D ultrasound if you want one. I don't think you automatically get a 3D ultrasound unless you need one because of complications or if the doc's office/hospital happens to do them standard.
  3. i never got a 3d or 4d ultrasound. i wanted one but my doctors office didn't have the equipment i guess. you'd have to ask your specific doctor about their sonogram machines and their schedule also. you can go to other places outside of the doctors office to have 3d or 4d ultrasounds. i think its around $100 and up. too many ultrasounds are not good though.
  4. 4D & 3D is used only in cases where there is fetal or maternal distress or suspected abnormalities. They are not needed for general measurements of the fetus. The ultrasound that is standard is the regular ole 2D. If you want a 3D or 4D then you'll have to go to one of those centers that will do it but you will pay for it yourself, not insurance.
  5. While there are 3D and 4D ultrasounds available, they are not typically done unless you pay for them at private facilities. My high risk OBGYN (perinatologist) office has the capability but did not do them. They showed me on the screen briefly, but did not print the pics or even save them for their use. Typically they are only used for medical reasons if they see a severe problem with your baby. Best of luck!
