3D - 2

Can you get 3d television over the air?

I am thinking of buying a 3d ready tv. I do not have cable though. Would I ever be able to watch special events in 3d? I understand that not every program will be in 3d, but is it possible to get 3d without cable? Thanks

  1. Satellite can do 3D content but with ordinary digital terrestrial (aerial) it is currently not possible. Probably due to the fact that Digital terrestrial has very limited bandwidth whereas Cable and Satellite's bandwidth is 'almost' unlimited!
  2. Yes, it can be done over the air. No one is currently doing it over the air because the audience is so small it would loose more viewers than it would gain.
  3. Right now you have to have direct tv to get their 3 3d channels. Some cable stations may carry them in certain areas. Over the air is just not practical for tv stations right now because the amount of people with 3d tv's is just to small. Yes broadcasting in 3d is possible. They actually did a field sequential 3d tv broadcast, which uses the shutter glasses, in Los Angeles in 1953. So field sequential 3d has been around for several decades.
  4. Right now, no, you can't get any 3D channels over the air. It's possible, but no network has made plans for it yet. ESPN 3D is the only 3D network right now and it's only available from directv and a few cable providers.
