What is a good 3d modeling software for building battle bots?

i have to create a battle bot for school and i have an idea but i want to see how it looks b4 i start building so i need good software the battle bot is on wheels jsyk.

1. The BEST, in my opinion, would be either Autodesk 3ds MAX or MAYA either 2009 or 2010. But any FREE programs, I couldn't give any recommendations. I'm not familiar with anything free online.
2. Autodesk is a very expensive option but a goodone, anyway as for freeware you can get Blender which is a more advanced 3d modle creator and a harder one to learn or a simplistic one from google, known as Google SketchUp. Links are in source. Hope this helps
