using audacity to record sound?

i have used audacity before but i can't get it to work on my laptop to record streaming internet radio, etc. the headphone jack on my laptop is broken so i can't hear sound on my lop top unless i plug my headphones or speakers into a "usb sound card" called 3D Sound. when i try to record through audacity it doesn't pick up any sound. is there a way i can get around this? are there any programs out there that i can use to record sound on my busted laptop? thanks

  1. I'm not sure because sound cards on newer computers are really restricted
  2. See if Audacity even detects the card: Edit> Preferences> Devices> Recording heading> Device: here it should be listed from the drop menu (if detected)> tick to select> OK out. If not, maybe one of any of the others would somehow be integrated. Alternate solution: Messer (Memo Session Sound Recorder ) is a software for for scheduled sound recording on PC. You can record from your PCs soundcard and output directly to PCM (.wav) or MP3 format. It can automatically stop and start recording at a choosen moment, optionally do simple processing on just recorded file (normalizing, mp3 compression..), then wait for another scheduled "recording session" and finally shut down the computer. Messer can do on-the-fly MP3 encoding. Freeware. http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/gmm/fwaudiorecorder.html Notes: Long sessions require large HDD's Select your systems speakers as the source. Lame encoders required for Mp3 work Mic must be muted or it will be picked up & tarnish your source recording. Volume is a bit weak; run tests to determine what exact settings you need &/or can utilize. Not hugely satisfactory on music; acceptable for voice however. Good luck.
  3. To record what you hear (or don't hear, in your case), you have to use Stereo Mix as the recording source. If your sound card doesn't have Stereo Mix, plug a patch cord (with an attenuator) from the earphone jack to the mic jack and use mic as your source. Turn the attenuator down enough so you don't get distortion. (Earphone level is MUCH higher than mic level.)
  4. you might have to set audacity to use your soundcard and set audacity to record from wave just be sure to have either a earphones headphones or speakers attached to your usb sound card. Hope this works Have a happy new year
