Surround sound not producing sound with HDMI cable?

Okay here's what happening I just bought a new Sony 3D tv and I already had a Sony surround sound system The surround sound worked before when I used the red and white cables on an older plasma Now I've removed those cables and plugged in the HDMI, however I am getting no sound from the speakers on the system. Can anybody help? Ps the amp is an sony s-master Cheers in advanced

  1. Sorry but you question is very unclear. It's not clear where the audio is originating nor what you are trying to connect to what. I'll attempt a general answer. In general surround sound systems require audio input via optical, coax digital or HDMI to generate surround (red/white is analog stereo). HDTVs generally OUTPUT audio over optical ... which can feed a surround sound system IF the TV is originating the signal (e.g. connected to a cable, cablebox or satellite receiver). HDMI can carry video and audio, BUT you have to connect from a source (output) to an amplifier (Input). Some surround systems only pass through the audio from an HDMI input (they don't amplify it) to the HDMI output. You also (usually) have to difine which input and which output are connected by settings in the source and amp menu (or selector knobs/switches). Somewhere in the above is probably the answer to your problem.
  2. Yes you must connect your tv to your sound system if your sound system is not the source of the picture
