3D - 2

How can I make a 3D model of an object from a photo?

Hi, I need to draw a 3-d model from a photo. It's the inside of a box with two spheres inside it. I know the dimensions of the box but I don't know the measurements for the exact position of the spheres within the box which is why I want to extract this information from the photo. Is there a simple way of doing this with some kind of 3D modeling software (hopefully free to download or try?) Thank you!

  1. Well. No 3D modeling software to my knowledge can magically extract that information. But you have two options: A lot of 2D graphics programs (eg. Photoshop) have Ruler tools which allow you to measure the distance between two points. GIMP would be a free option. You could also use Google Sketchup which is a 3D modeling program and is free however you'd probably have to create a face and apply your image as a texture and then use it's measuring tool. The second option is to use math. If you have the dimensions of the box, and you're dealing with perfect spheres the math would be quite simple. I couldn't say which option would be better without looking at the actual photo in question (I'd personally recommend determining it mathematically since it would provide the more accurate answer).
