3D - 2

Which is the better 3D modeling program, Adobe Photoshop CS5 or Blender?

I've been getting into 3d modeling with Blender recently, and I really like it, but I also have Photoshop CS5 and found out that it also has a 3D modeling portion to it. I can't find any information on how advanced Photoshop's modeling is, but was wondering if anyone with experience could help me decide which program to pursue so I don't spend my time learning a program when there is a better one out there.

  1. Hello, I'd rather say Photoshop CS5 because i use it and it is popular. you can find many tutos about using Photoshop CS5 than Blender. Good luck
  2. My experience with 3D goes back before they had IDE to manipulate shapes. We did it all with code. To do 3D content productively, you use a variety of tools. I still say Blender is the fastest way to make a screen-mesh model. A screen-mesh gives you options when taking the model into other software programs. And, a screen-mesh has less surprises about the detail quality you will get as an end result. Programs like Maya are outstanding in that it has very special modules that can convert a Nurbs surface to mesh and back again. Most 3D packages will only convert one-way. Don't forget that Blender 2.57 is the beginning of the commercial quality add-ons with more to come. Blender also lends itself to scripting. I have seen many great packages gain popularity and then die in the dustbin. I would NEVER pay money for a 3D software. And especially, I would never restrict myself to work that only will function on a Windows box. It is my conviction that you are witnessing 3D in its infancy. Within 5 years something like stereo cameras will be priced as a hobbyist tool and offer instant 3D content. Currently, the cheapest stereo camera I have observed was priced at about $5k. Thanks for your question. The Adobe product does look interesting, but it is rather fundamental. Sometimes the simple modeling can be what you wanted.
  3. Autodesk does Maya and 3D Studio Max. They are what Blender competes with an have an advantage in that they use Disney's proprietary Renderman format. Adobe does NOT have serious capabilities in this category. You are better off learning blender thoroughly.
