Is there a significant difference between HD Surround Sound and 3D Surround Sound?

I own a sony 5.1 home theatre sound system and was wondering if when I buy a 3DTV should I invest in 3D surround sound? Alot of surround sound systems are being built with 3D sound (Whatever that means) and was wondering what the difderence is, and if its really worth purchasing a new home theatre set up?

1. Maybe the question can be re-phrased "Is there a difference between 5.1 channel surround sound and 7.1 channel surround sound?" If I have a wide room flexible enough to properly place 2 surround speakers at the rear, then probably difference can be felt. I'm thinking of upgrading myself however I would like to spend more time reading reviews from actual users and avid HT enthusiast before investing on a new AV receiver and a couple of surround speakers.
