- In a passive 3d TV, passive three dimensionally designed glasses are used. These are similar to specifically made polarized goggles. These glasses are designed to block the light from the eyes equally, here the glasses will block different sorts of light so that they do not travel to each eye, thus they create an illusion that the view is deep; which is also known as the depth of field. Now, this means that to experience this effect one does not need an expensive pair of electronic gadgets anymore. They even do not need any expensive infrared emitting equipment which will be in synchronization with the polarized glasses. Here, each lens blocks light traveling to each eye, thus not allowing a complete 1080p image to fall on each of the eyes, but the brain perceives 1080p image at the time when images from both the eyes combine together. If we compare this to an active 3d TV then we will see that the glasses used are actually small LCD screens which flicker alternatively to dim the lenses in succession. The glasses rely on an expensive infra red emitter which guides the lenses as when to dim. Now, as this process is quite complicated and the mechanics used is quite complex, hence the price of these sort of glasses are also very high. Also these glasses depend on batteries. Adding to which is its weight which may make the entire TV viewing experience a struggling one. Now, when we come to the conclusion we have to analyze as to which of the 3d TV types better. Even though the active 3d glasses will be producing a better viewing picture for the viewers, its weight and expensive price range will be lagging it behind the passive 3d glasses. Moreover, the passive 3d glasses have much less mechanism which will make it easier to replace than its counterpart. Although the picture quality is a bit lower, but its acceptability to a large mass will make it sit at the top of the pile. Hence, passive 3d TV may be the one for future and may be termed as a winner which has arrived.
- Passive 3D TVs are more comfortable for the eyes than conventional (active) 3D TVs because passive 3D TVs don't have flickers like active 3D TVs do. Also passive 3D glasses are cheaper and more comfortable to wear especially if you have to wear them over prescribed glasses. Active 3D TVs require expensive active 3D glasses, which you have to purchase separately. Some people get headahces and eyestrains from watching 3D on an active 3D set because of the flickers and crosstalks. Of passive 3D TVs, I recommend LG Cinema 3D. It's certified flicker free and crosstalk free and has the most features and apps (2D to 3D conversion, YouTube, exclusive deals from Netflix, etc).
- An expensive, eye-straining toy that has little viewing capability, other than rather overpriced DVD's... I'll just wait for the glasses free HDTV... Coming soon to a store near you...
- Here's a good passive 3D system that beats the rest of them on price: it's free. * See sources below. *
