Cannot play 7.1 DTS through my Philips Optical In?
I just got a new LG 3D 55" TV. I have a $200 surround sound system by Philips. I have the PS3 hooked up to the TV with HDMI. I have the Surround sound hooked up from Optical out on the TV to Optical in on Philips. I purchased my first 3D Blu-Ray disc, the Lion King. Set everything up for 3D, everyone sat down with our glasses and no sound through the surround sound. PS3 sounds have no problem but the 7.1 DTS from the disc won't come through. I thought the Optical line could handle this. Is my older surround sound incapable of decoding 7.1 DTS into 5.1? To get sound out I had to take the analog audio cables from the PS3 and put it into Audio In on the TV. Then it played through the Philips and there seem to be 5.1 sound in the rear speakers. Thanks for any help.

- In order to hear DTS-HD MA or Dolby True HD from Blu-ray movies you need to have a receiver with these decoders on board then you have to connect HDMI from Blu-ray player to HDMI input of receiver. Optical cable is not capable of decoding lossless sound. You have to connect optical cable directly from PS3 to sound system for surround sound, not from TV to sound system.
- Those cheap home theater in a box are not capable of the 7.1 audio. Optical cable are only capable of the 5.1 audio. The HDMI cable is the only cable that is capable of handling the 7.1 audio. You also need a receiver that can decode the DTS-HD Master audio 7.1. Again your home theater in a box does not have the DTS-HD Master audio decoder. Hope this will help you out.
