No sound when playing 7.1 Blu-Ray through PS3?

I just got a new LG 3D 55" TV. I have a $200 surround sound system by Philips. I have the PS3 hooked up to the TV with HDMI. I have the Surround sound hooked up from Optical out on the TV to Optical in on Philips. I purchased my first 3D Blu-Ray disc, the Lion King. Set everything up for 3D, everyone sat down with our glasses and no sound through the surround sound. PS3 sounds have no problem but the 7.1 DTS from the disc won't come through. I thought the Optical line could handle this. Is my older surround sound incapable of decoding 7.1 DTS into 5.1? To get sound out I had to take the analog audio cables from the PS3 and put it into Audio In on the TV. Then it played through the Philips and there seem to be 5.1 sound in the rear speakers. Thanks for any help.
