  1. When buying a speaker, you should demo them first at your local retail store. Here are some brand to look for: Definitive Technology, Energy, JBL, Infinity, Klipsch and Polk Audio to name a few. Sony is not the best on surround sound. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on just about anything you are interested in. Sony has a poor customer service support and they are not a very dependable product. I never had any Sony tv (2 first HDTV in the market price $6,400 34" CRT tv and a 32" CRT), DVD player (2 both priced at over $1,100 when they first came out) and they did not last more than 3 years. Hope this will help you out.
  2. A lot depends on what size of room you have how lively the acoustics are; how close you sit to the speakers how many seating positions you have and how many people usually watch a movie, how powerful al amp you have etc...I recommend a dedicated AV receiver with at least 60 watts a channel RMS and maybe more if the room is large or you occasionally entertain large groups of people like 6 or more at a time...the best well that can cost thousands of dollars take a look at Sonus Faber Revel or Wilson Audio speakers for examples of the best, Steve Guttenberg who has reviewed hundreds of speakers and has a blog called the Audiopiliac says the best speakers under $3500 are Magnapan; Zu Audio: Anthony Gallo; Thiel; Totem; Definitive Technology; Dynaudio; Aperion; Klipsch and Energy, take a look at the Energy take classic 5.1 for some pretty good sound at reasonable prices, Sony is far from the best more towards the lower end...speakers that compete with Sony in price but sound better include BIC; Fluance; Dayton Jamo
