making an explosion in 3d studio max?

i was making a home movie and decided to add few effects. i wanted to add an explosion effect so i figured i would make a snap shot of the scene and work with it in photoshop and import it into movie maker but i did not like the results i got with photoshop. the explosion looks very cartoonish and i was looking for something more realistic. i was just wondering if it was possible to make an explosion of an object in 3d studio max on a picture. oh this is animated explosion btw
