Need 3d Landscape Editor...?

does anyone know where i could find a free 3d landscape editor that isnt for building houses? I'm doing a project for a mythology class where we need to create a culture, we'd like to make a 3d model of some kind that will show the area that we are creating for these thought up people to live. thanks
