3D - 2

Who can advise me on buying a super computer for 3d modeling and rendering with Blender (www.blender.org)?

Blender.org won't answer my questions. I want to buy myself a super computer - ultimate speed for modeling and rendering. Duo Core or Quad Core? Power from RAM or Power from the graphic card? One graphic card or two? How much memory? Can anyone advise me on technical specifications for the PC? Does Blender (www.blender.org) render on a graphic card or on the CPU? Please help.

  1. For modeling and rendering, you'll definitely want a Quad-Core CPU- I recommend the 45nm Yorkfield line, like the Q9450. I don't think there's enough of a performance gap to justify the "Extreme" CPUs costing 3 times as much. As much RAM as you can afford, and a 64-bit OS- at least 4gb. For gaming, the GPU is far more important than the CPU, but for for 3D modeling you're not looking for 90+ fps in a shooter. For your video card, you won't be looking at the gaming cards like the GeForce 9800/Radeon 4800 lines- you'll want a card geared for design and modeling like Nvidia's Quadra FX line. For specific card recommendations, I'd check with other users of programs like Blender and Maya- they must have user community forums somewhere online...
